The reason for the delay described in #84 and #85 seems to be a firmware-bug in a wlan router (D-Link DIR-655). It doesn't seem to pass NXDOMAIN-responses to the clients when it is set up to relay requests. The upstream servers respond immediately with NXDOMAIN when queried directly. However, this problem wasn't discovered before so the behaviour of the client resolver has obviously changed in karmic.
