Actually, I have a reasonable solution to this problem...
I'm going to add the keyctl keyring clearing to the ecryptfs-umount-private shell script wrapper.
The recommended mechanism for unmounting your private data AND clearing your keyring of the relevant keys will be to use the helper:
$ ecryptfs-umount-private
