What action did you perform when the error happend? Could you please attach your /var/lib/dpkg/status file to this bugreport?

There's a lot of duplicates showing up from this bug. Can people on the duplicates comment exactly what they were doing that caused this scenario so we can look for some commonality? Also /var/lib/dpkg/status would be good to compare among different people.

I did a fresh install of 9.10 and haven't seen a problem that can't be
fixed by upgrading my hardware :) sorry I don't have any details on
this bug cuz I forgot all about it. Btw, I'm now 100% free from
windows at home. Yay! :)

On upgrading from 9.10 I can not get over this error that sounds like the problem described above:

Preparing to replace dkms 2.1.0.1-0ubuntu1 (using .../dkms_2.1.1.2-2fakesync1_all.deb) ...
dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute old pre-removal script: Exec format error
dpkg: warning: old pre-removal script returned error exit status 2
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/dkms_2.1.1.2-2fakesync1_all.deb (--unpack):
 there is no script in the new version of the package - giving up
dpkg (subprocess): unable to execute installed post-installation script: Exec format error
dpkg: error while cleaning up:
 subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/dkms_2.1.1.2-2fakesync1_all.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

This is on MacBook Pro 5.3 with 195 Nvidia drivers. I am using the kernel from 9.10 because the latest doe not work.
