Prior to receiving the 'not genuine Ubuntu' message I got an 'Application Problem' crash warning.

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help make Ubuntu better. However, displayconfig-gtk is deprecated in Intrepid, and is no longer in the repositories (hence the message that you see). Therefore, I will close this report as Invalid.

Thanks

This is related to bug 272540, that the update-manager does not notify the user about packages that have been removed from the archives. In this particular case, the update-manager should probably just remove displayconfig-gtk from the system during the upgrade.

Hi Chris

That's good news, so how do we get it out of Intrepid Alpha 6 and stop
the message appearing when trying to run Screens and Graphics (or is
that deprecated too)?

displayconfig-gtk is 'Screens and Graphics'. You just need to uninstall the displayconfig-gtk package from your local machine.

sudo apt-get remove displayconfig-gtk

I confirm sudo apt-get remove displayconfig-gtk ran ok without incident. I had to manually remove 'Screens and Graphics' menu item in Applications>Other by deleting in System>Preferences>Main Menu.

I'm getting an 'Unknown' message in Monitor Resolution Settings window. Its a common Compaq V70. A smaller window says the same thing top left of the desktop.

How do we choose drivers and monitors now?

displayconfig-gtk doesn't exist in Intrepid, see:
$ rmadison displayconfig-gtk
displayconfig-gtk | 0.2ubuntu2 | feisty/universe | source, amd64, i386, powerpc
displayconfig-gtk | 0.3.7 | gutsy | source, all
displayconfig-gtk | 0.3.10 | hardy | source, all

So yes, I agree that this goes with the bug filed about update-manager should tell the user about packages that no longer exist.

This is an apport issue not u-m. Reaffecting.

Changed in update-manager:
importance: Undecided → Low
status: Incomplete → Triaged
affects: apport (Ubuntu) → displayconfig-gtk (Ubuntu)
