In my opinion, opening the contacts view from within the dialer app should be handled like opening the contacts app and clicking on the search button, because it is not about editing/adding contacts (or just calling contacts beginning with an A) but finding contacts very quickly for a call. Maybe for consistency reasons, it is a good idea to change the contacts icon with the question mark (and add an increased tap area). It is possible to search for a desired number, so that a question mark on the dialer view is valid for such a function.
