After upgrading 'netbase'to the latest version the problem seems to be gone. I
haven't tested more carefully though - three reboots so far. Here's the
ChangeLog - bug 21617

netbase (4.21ubuntu3) breezy; urgency=low

  * debian/netbase.init: Temporarily increase usplash timeout to 120 seconds
    to cope with slop DHCP server responses. (Ubuntu #15394)
