Just happend to me with my Aspire one netbook. I was running Ubuntu netbook edition also updating. Will try to do the live cd recovery proposed.
Agree with a coment above: what if it is your only PC? pretty bad stuff to happen on an update.

There is Busybox 1.13.3.... anything that can be done with that?
