Denyhosts won't start for me on hardy

Could not find environment variable: HOSTNAME
root@blah:~# /etc/init.d/denyhosts start
 * Starting DenyHosts denyhosts
   ...done.
root@blah:~# ps aux | grep denyhosts
root@blah:~#
