As suggested by Mithrandir (on IRC), I used the "debian-installer/framebuffer=false" in the boot options, and the problem doesnt manifest itself.
When booting up the newly installed OS, the boot splash doesn't appear. I guess that's the result of not enabling framebuffer.
However, X works. I'm guessing something is wrong with the way framebuffer works with the i810 graphics driver ? How can one debug that ?
