dbus-daemon appears to be the main cause of the unusable system performance I am experiencing on my Kubuntu Karmic setup:

I am not the prime target of a development release because I am not a developer and, above all, I do not "do code." On the other hand, I have been beating the .... out of alpha and beta software for almost 30 years and have learned a thing or two about the subject over the time, including to follow developers' instructions on tracking down problems.
