The problem had been resolved on that machine as noted above by rerunning the upgrader. I was able to reproduce the issue on a (nearly) identical installation. Here is the output of the requested commands directly after the upgrade fails, I had hoped to see a more of a clue as to why the problem occurred:

root@backup2:~# apt-get install -f
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
The following packages were automatically installed and are no longer required:
  linux-headers-2.6.20-16-generic libslab0 linux-headers-2.6.20-16 libgs-esp8
Use 'apt-get autoremove' to remove them.
0 upgraded, 0 newly installed, 0 to remove and 673 not upgraded.
