I have the identical printer, HP Desktop 710C, and can confirm this exact problem. The printer worked fine with dapper, edgy, feisty, but stopped working in gutsy. Disabling apparmor fixes the problem:

sudo /etc/init.d/apparmor kill
sudo update-rc.d -f apparmor remove
