Same problem here on standard Kubuntu 8.04 x86_64 install:

$ uname -a

FWIW, with the Brother HL5250DN driver in the standard install, I can print duplex, but as with above, all areas to select landscape are grayed out. I then installed xpdf and now understand why it is called unacceptable! I can landscape but cannot duplex, as there are no printing options.

gpdf is not available:
$ sudo apt-get install gpdf
