Apparently, even the document viewer in ubuntu prints correctly.
So, it appears that if the viewer is intelligent enough to rotate the document before sending it out to print, it's all ok, but if the viewer relies on ghostscript to do the work (like kpdf, acroread v8 and even plain lpr do, I suppose), the prints gets screwed up.
This is as far as I could go. I hope to have given enough data to work with.
