I confirm bug with "/usr/lib/cups/backend/cups-pdf failed" status.
I have 755 on /home/username.
I have no PDF folder, or manually created PDF with permissions 700, in both cases I got same error.
In Ubuntu 8.04 its work without any manual tricks.
