Switching to vt7 does indeed let me enter the passphrase. The text mode handling is a bit messed up, with the prompt being reprinted for every keypress I type, so that eventually it's repeated N times down the screen.

After that I do get to the recovery menu, which is good.

However, if I choose 'resume normal startup', the machine comes up to multiuser mode, but it does not start X. I'm just left on vt7 in text mode. I can then switch to vt1 and log in. I verified there that gdm was not running at all. If I do 'sudo service gdm start' then it does come up properly. This might be a separate bug?
