Micah, thanks. But I prefer my solution :). I think the man pages are
correct. I think it's the info pages which are broken.

The behaviour I'm looking for is what I had and am used to on redhat and
gentoo previously.

P.S. my chmod page doesn't have that regex, so perhaps that's been fixed.
