i started fresh installation of ubuntu 7.05 fulmar (polish edition). The problem occured just after launching ubuntu from livecd.

i forgot to mention tha i was installig ubuntu on vmware fusion! im using macbook with macosx. I wanted to be able to run simultaniously ubuntu.

I would suspect that vmware on osx is doing something strange. This command does not fail on a native install.
