I had the same problem using a Ubuntu 12.10/Gnome 3.6/Radeon HD 6650M/fglrx-updates set up. None of the workarounds worked for gnome-shell (although they worked when using Unity).
My workaround was to uninstall gnome-screensaver and replace it with xscreensaver.
