I started Xorg with verbosity 6. Notice that mode 1280x1024 @ 75 Hz is identified as "valid" at lines 572, 728, 1256 and 2199.
xresprobe didn't produce anything when it was started with parameters "nvidia" and "nvidia lcd", so I started ddcprobe. I hope it will be helpful.
You mention the video card and its driver. In a reply, I can say that hardware worked OK on edgy and works OK even now on Windows, so the problem might be in the drivers. Here are the versions of driver software I'm using: nvidia-glx version 1.0.9631+2.6.20.3-11.10 and linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-11-generic version 2.6.20.3-11.10.
