In similar I could see this problem, that is fired when selecting a workspace only by mouse
1. Open any window on two workspaces
2. Ctrl+S(Expose)
Now you can see it, if you select a workspace by mouse(not keyboard arrow keys)

my laptop is thinkpad x220 4287-A28
Ubuntu is lastest stable relase 12.04
compiz : 0.9.7.8
unity : 5.12
