In every case thus far, the old drivers did fix the problem. This problem
only applies to certain models of older integrated nVidia cards from what we
can tell. Unity is not the problem, I don't know why you think disabling
that will help. Unity just manages the windows, it doesn't draw them.
However, when you disable compiz (and, by extension, all related special
effects) the problem has gone away because you are no longer accelerating
the graphics with the GPU, if I remember correctly. So, Ubuntu Classic (No
Effects) is what you're looking for I believe, but as much as I hate
blamestorming, I really do believe this is nVidia's fault and they should
fix it.
