Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

I'm using Karmic and ever since about a month ago (not sure exact date) whenever the computer returns from sleep the screen is frozen. The image itself on the screen is frozen but the computer is still active including the mouse cursor which works and I can hover it over screen elements and see how the cursor reacts to them (turns to an I-beam when over text fields etc).

When the computer resumes the screen is either frozen completely blank (black) which is often how it is when it resumes from a closed laptop lid or I see the previous content of the screen but its just a static image - which often happens when I resume the laptop after it has been sitting open for a few hours.

when that happens I can log in by positioning the mouse carefully on the screensaver-lock input box, typing the password blindly and then blindly using ALT-F2 and executing "compiz --replace" which restores my desktop (albeit reset with all windows on the first workspace).

I can reproduce this 100%. My hardware is Thinkpad T61 with GM965.

It seems to me to be the same so I marked it as a duplicate. Here is a quick repeat of the explanation how to workaround the issue:

1. Try to figure out if your screen is locked by moving the cursor across the screen and watching it shape - if the screen is locked you should get an I-Beam cursor only at about the middle of the screen. If this is the case type your password and hit ENTER to release the lock.
2. hit ALT-F2 to bring up the run dialog (you won't see anything happening but it will work) and then type "compiz --replace" (without the quotes) and hit ENTER. Your screen should take a few seconds to refresh the display with a new not broken compiz.

This was a bug in the intel driver fixed recently. With up-to-date karmic you should not see this problem anymore.
