I got tired of Ubuntu 8.10, so I thought I should give Arch Linux a chance. So far I'm very impressed with Arch.
Arch's latest Gnome build is 2.24.3. By default the annoying delay's still there, but when I installed compiz and compiz fusion it totally disappeared! Now there is no delay whatsoever at boot.
I run compiz like this: compiz --replace --sm-disable --ignore-desktop-hints ccp
