Your solution doesn't work for me at all. If I edit those files, my gnome desktop doesn't even start, I only get a black screen, although the login sound does play.
Using Intrepid (up to date) on a Dell Inspiron 1525. I got Intrepid by upgrading Hardy, way back when Intrepid was released.
