Yes getting rid of gnome-wm solves the problem on intrepid... but then compiz is not loaded and I have no window decorations.
As a workaround however, I find that disabling gnome-wm and enabling "fusion-icon" (not "fusion-icon --no-start") - works nicely. This still isn't ideal, though. People are getting a bad first impression of ubuntu.
