The menus such as Applications, Places, and System, as well as tooltips, are shared between all virtual desktops instead of confined to the current one. This becomes apparent when you configure the desktop as a transparent cube. Set the non-rotating transparency to, say, 50% and open a menu or hold your mouse over a menu item -- and watch as the tooltip/menu appears on all the other visible cube faces as well.
