Compiz trouble with monitor geometry

Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

When I initiate window switchers or the desktop plane, Compiz centers elements in the upper left corner of my display, and sometimes only draws effects in that quadrant. A picture is worth a thousand words so I have attached two of them.

Is /apps/compiz/general/screen0/options/detect_outputs checked in gconf-editor?

Yes, all settings are the default Gutsy compiz package settings.

What is the output of 'glxinfo -l | grep MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE'? I have a feeling your screen resolution is larger than your max texture size.

GL_MAX_TEXTURE_SIZE = 2048

My screen resolution is 1920x1200.

Bump.

This is an important issue... Many "power-users" have large monitors. These people are often very experienced with computers and software, and therefore they are very demanding and critical of bugs. Since they are experienced, their opinions are considered authoritative and they are more likely to influence the opinions of others. The bottom line is that this bug will negatively affect written reviews of Gutsy.

Unchecking "Detect Outputs" and changing the default output "640x480+0+0" to "1920x1200+0+0" makes compiz behave as expected, although I'm not sure what I'll see then I disconnect from the external display and compiz tries to draw on my internal LCD screen at 1200x900.

I experience the same problem: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/147363

For me, this can also be fixed by unchecking "Detect Outputs".

Albert's comment fixed it my Mac Mini problem with a single LCD monitor.

I have a new Intel Mac Mini with an Intel GMA 950 graphics card. System->Administration->Screens and Graphics indicates Gutsy is using the intel experimental modessing driver for the Intel 945.

It all seems to work okay except maximising the window didn't fill the bottom 20% of the screen.

I unchecked "Detect Outputs" in the compiz settings, restarted compiz, and then maximise worked properly again.

This bug made vlc/totem not play dvd's and other videos in full screen correctly. Fixing it will help the transition of Mac mini owners. :)

would this bug also be causing the gnome-panel to keep putting my panel applets in the wrong place, even when they are locked?

I guess this is a duplicate of Bug #130933.
