[Hardy] [Gutsy] Compiz full screen not correctly calculated

Bug Description

Binary package hint: compiz

My hardware configuration is a laptop (X61s) with an external screen connected through a docking station. The laptop screen is closed in that case.

Laptop screen resolution 1024x768
External screen: 1280x1024

When doing a full screen of a window with compiz on the external screen, the window is sized 1024x768. If I disable compiz, the full screen is ok, 1280x1024.

It looks like compiz is not taking the size of the desktop at the same place as metacity.

This also happens for me. Laptop screen 1024x768; External screen 1280x1024
I'm using an HP NC6210 laptop with the new intel driver.
This is still happening with the latest packages as of today. Unfortunately this is a showstopper for me and prevents me using Compiz.

With todays updates there are some changes. If the window is located near to the top left corner it will maximise to the smaller screen size. However if I move the window away from the top left it will sometimes maximise correctly. Clicking on links etc within the window causes it to re-maximise to the smaller screen size again.

Using CompizConfig Settings Manager, General Options->Display Settings if I uncheck Detect Outputs the external screen works correctly for me with 1280x1024+0+0 as the only item listed in Outputs.

Does restarting compiz after attaching the second monitor fix this problem?

I'll test this tonight. However, the second monitor is permanently connected most of the time so I doubt it will make any difference.

No combination of connection/reconnection works for me. The only thing that makes it work correctly is unchecking Detect Outputs and manually specifying 1280x1024. Of course this is then too big for my laptop screen but the laptop remains closed at home.
(I have all latest updates)

This should have been fixed by the upload of compiz done yesterday, can you check again?

I have the same problem, and I'm sorry to say it is still not resolved for me after doing an upgrade yesterday.

I get the same problem with the Intel experimental driver and switching between 1440x900 to an external 1600x1050. The only thing that works for me is turning off compizFusion and this gives me 1400x1050 as the highest working res with the external display.

This still happens in current Hardy. The only workaround I have found so far is to run xrandr (disabling LFP) while gdm is started. Running xrandr after login doesn't work since compiz still has the wrong resolution.

I don't understand what information was requested but not provided. It seems the only request was to see if restarting compiz fixed it, which was confirmed not to work.

Have confirmed this is still an issue after an upgrade to hardy. My specs are the laptop screen is 1280x800 and my external monitor is 1680x1050

Also, I've noticed that if I have my Firefox 3 (beta 4) window extends beyond the original 1280x800 top left of the screen, when I click on a link in another application (Evolution, Liferea, for example), and Firefox opens another tab, it also resizes the entire Firefox window to the upper left 1280x800 portion of the screen.

I had the same problem, but remembered I fixed it before..
It is a detection issue in compiz. Check this link for the full discussion: http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-582551.html

For the less patient, here is the fix :)
- Install Compiz Advanced Desktop Setting;
- Open it and go to "General Options", then "Display Settings";
- Uncheck "Detect Outputs";
- In "Ouputs", edit the resolution (mine was set at 800x600x0x0) to your external display's resolution (mine is now 1600x1200).

This workaround would require me to tweak things every time I attach or
detach an external screen to my laptop. That's quite inconvenient, so
I'm hoping a real fix will be found.

This was what I thought as well, but I have been running like this for months and I have no problem with it. When no external screen is attached the windows still resize correctly on my 1024x768 internal screen.

Roger, you have just one external screen, or several that you switch
between, such as projectors?

Lars,

I have also used it with a projector on at least one occation, still without problems.

Hello
with turning off the "detect outputs" and then changing the output to 1680x1050 solved the problem for me !!

do not know what the detect output off will do later on

however, I struggle with the intel 945 driver, and it does not allow me to setup two screens , laptop and then the monitor

best
