I installed the full ubuntu-desktop metapackage as a sanity check on those missing dependencies.

Following some diagnostics from compiz-check (reporting the use of the Vesa Driver) I reconfigured /usr/share/lib/X11/xorg.conf.d/10-monitor manually to employ the savage driver (to correspond with my video card).

After repeating the launch of...
compiz --replace ccp
...with the gtk-window-decoration configured from ccsm as described, things seem to go further, showing some apparently decorated windows (the fruity theme is very recognisable) but also showing broken imagery with stray blue pixels and parts not repainting. Finally something seems to crash fairly finally and I can't regain focus on the terminal window to reload a stable window manager

Logging into the terminal through CTRL+ALT+F1 and running
export DISPLAY=0:0; metacity --replace
...seems to recover things for me to retry.

I'm pushing forward to a 3.5 release candidate kernel to see if that helps in any way. Any other things I can attempt to get Compiz to play nicely with a Savage video card?

A savagefb driver seems to have been discussed in the past. Don't know if there are any other config options in xorg.conf I can attempt to help with stability.
