I believe I have solved my problem! After some research, I made the following change:
--> Preferences --> Default Applications for LXSession --> Autostart
CHECKED the box for PolicyKit Authentication Agent
Closed and rebooted.
Now the software updater runs perfectly! Something apparently changed in the way authentication is done/or unchecked PolicyKit during a prior update. I don't remember doing anything in that area at all myself.
Hope this will be a clue to some resolution for others!
