Today it is possible to mount the SD card via the mount command. However, afaik to do so automatically one must manually change the root fs, which is discouraged.
I personally mount my SD card with ext4 fs using an edited /etc/rc.local and have not experienced any problems yet. However, I might not have realized them or they might appear with an touch update.
And not all apps support this manually mounted location, however I could convince the gallery app to show pictures using a symbolic link.
So to me the best solution seems to hope for a change in ciborium.
