I've got a proposed fix to mangle PACKAGE_VERSION to use the full packaging version instead of just upstream x.x.x. It's available now on ppa:tjaalton/test
To verify if that works, you'd need to run chrome/chromium with the current version in -updates first (...22.04.1), then update to the ppa version (22.04.3~ppa1) and see if it still works.
