Bug Description

Ubuntu fails to boot into a usable system on my Thinkpad T43. Once the Ubuntu startup animation starts it spins indefinitely. This occurs both with beta 1 and the daily build from today (b9c7c638b8002ca0817354f95da3940a). This occurs with a live CD and a live USB flash disk.

Please let me know if I can provide any other data.

Thank you for taking the time to report this issue and help to improve Ubuntu.

How long did you wait for the boot to finish before concluding that it was spinning "indefinitely"?

What happens if you boot with the 'splash' option removed from the kernel commandline?

Attached is a poor man's screenshot illustrating what I see on boot when I disable splash from the boot command.

Originally I'd left my laptop for 10-15 mins without any progress. This time I left it for ~45 mins and I just noticed that it actually did boot into the live desktop, it just took forever.

Is there any additional information I can provide?

There probably is, but reassigning this to the desktop installer components first for the installer folks to figure out what information they need :)

I have a brand new Thinkpad SL510. The Lucid Beta 1 live USB flash disk works very well on this computer. I tried installing the same version from the alternate .iso and it would not boot. I got a message that an unsupported Thinkpad had been detected and then it just gave up. An older version (9.04 Jaunty) I have installed on an external USB hard drive runs OK except for the fact that I cannot get the wireless connection to work.

@Brian Fallik - I did get a message that said "not yet supported Thinkpad detected" What is that about? I wonder why I can't install Lucid beta 1 on my machine when the live CD written to a USB key drive works very well?

Brian Fallik, thank you for reporting this and helping make Ubuntu better. This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/ .

If it remains an issue, could you run the following command in the development release from a Terminal (Applications->Accessories->Terminal). It will automatically gather and attach updated debug information to this report.

apport-collect -p linux <replace-with-bug-number>

Also, if you could test the latest upstream kernel available that would be great. It will allow additional upstream developers to examine the issue. Refer to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelMainlineBuilds . Once you've tested the upstream kernel, please remove the 'needs-upstream-testing' tag. This can be done by clicking on the yellow pencil icon next to the tag located at the bottom of the bug description and deleting the 'needs-upstream-testing' text.

If this bug is fixed in the mainline kernel, please add the following tag 'kernel-fixed-upstream'.

If the mainline kernel does not fix this bug, please add the tag: 'kernel-bug-exists-upstream'.

If you are unable to test the mainline kernel, for example it will not boot, please add the tag: 'kernel-unable-to-test-upstream'.

Please let us know your results. Thanks in advance.
