thanks for the details about crc checking, indeed the dbg is broken in hardy, you can use the dbgsym which doesn't have this issue in hardy apparently, closing the bug since the karmic version is fixed and that bug doesn't justify a stable update for hardy especially that it's recommended to use the dbgsym builds for ubuntu
