So I ran the following:
pango-view -t "CAIRO" --backend=cairo --font="Times New Roman" pango-view -t "XFT" --backend=xft --font="Times New Roman" pango-view -t "FT2" --backend=ft2 --font="Times New Roman" pango-view -t "X" --backend=x --font="Times New Roman"
and got the attached screenshot...
It looks most closely like the cairo screenshot but I am not sure what you were getting at earlier with respect to the rendering.
