I have checked on Maverick using OpenOffice 3.2.1, and it seems that the problem is not with the openoffice backend, because I have checked the pdf opening with Evince, XPdf and adobe reader 9 available in Software center. Only adobe reader renders it fine. See the screenshots attached for each application, and the test pdf to check for yourself.
