I retested this on a theory (see 164233.tar.gz). Test1.pdf is from the steps above, and produces a chunky result as described. test2.pdf however was created using the print to file method of creating pdf files, which I believe is a completely different library, and it looks right (at least on this system).

This leads me to believe that the issue is in /usr/lib/libreoffice/program/libpdffilterlo.so or OpenOffice/LibreOffice.
