I guess it should be replaced by gnome-shell-extension-caffeine for GNOME shell?

Are you trying to use it with an X session or with the Wayland one? If it's about X, then this will be fixed when the latest upload to Debian reaches Ubuntu. If it's about Wayland, there won't be a fix yet.
