10.5.1-6ubuntu0.2 tested with Japanese Kana.

Can confirm that can select Japanese Kana from the applet and type directly into a text editor.

Switch to GB and keyboard layout and text was ok. Switched to US and US keyboard layout chosen. Changed again to Kana and Japanese layout and characters can be typed.
