This is a 'golden oldie', now in 2021... I compiled brasero 3.12.2 and still had the same problem, and I'm not even on Ubuntu!
The DVD had been in use from a previous read (other program), and Brasero was not able to dismount the drive (or even eject the disk, which might have solved the problem too). I suspect that just issuing an umount would solve the issue.
