A victorious workaround! - I installed Nero Linux Trial 3.5.2.1 and it so far works beautifully. I've managed to write discs that have so far failed, using the same ISO images.
Of course I'd rather use the native utilities, however I've abandoned those until I learn more about this bug, or it finally is resolved in an update...
