@Kris: Yes, it works without the bluetooth stack probably because your dongle is in HID mode.

Setting both HID2HCI_ENABLED and HID2HCI_UNDO to 1 in /etc/default/bluetooth should make your dongle go to HCI mode during boot and back to HID mode on shutdown. Then you should be able to pair your mouse/keyboard and use other bluetooth devices as well.

New versions of BlueZ have an input service so hidd is no longer necessary. The bluetooth device (mouse/keyboard) should try to reconnect and this service should handle everything. However, this isn't happenning, unfortunately.

It would be good to test with a newer kernel/userspace (Karmic?) as this problem might have been fixed already.
