I can reproduce the crash as well.
Some additional notes :
- I'm using : HD4850, blender 2.57.2, mesa fc8c4a3a7b92a1134cd3a9312063abba9e14b0fe
- with LIBGL_ALWAYS_SOFTWARE=1 => no crash
- here's the segfault backtrace :
