After upgrading ubuntu on Macbook 5,1 to raring, I had same issues described in this bug report: no wifi, sudo hangs, NetworkManager using 100% CPU, unable to shutdown/reboot gracefully.
In addition, connecting an ethernet cable to my laptop did not provide access to networking/internet which made it difficult to fix the problem.
In order to resolve this issue, I rebooted into recovery mode and downgraded bcmwl to quantal version 5.100.82.112+bdcom-0ubuntu3.
