Bug Description

Binary package hint: bcm43xx-fwcutter

DISTRIB_ID=Ubuntu
DISTRIB_RELEASE=7.04
DISTRIB_CODENAME=feisty
DISTRIB_DESCRIPTION="Ubuntu feisty (development branch)"

Machine - HP dv6000 laptop
Steps to reproduce:
Install fwcutter in synaptic Result: prompted to download firmware for bcm4311 (nice work, that is sweet)
Connect to wireless wpa encrypted network Result: Connects without a problem, connection is extrememly slow and not nearly as fast as it is in windows. Downloads that come in screaming at 500kbs on windows only come in at 28kbps.

I also disabled the encryption and the result is the same. Connecting with wpa does not seem to be a problem.

This is the first time I've been able to get wireless going on this laptop. Thanks for making it easy. I hope this slowness thing can be worked out.

Sure thing. Actually your command produced nothing because apparently with
lspci it's reported as Broadcom and not BCM. Here is the output from lspci
-v that you're looking for. I'm happy to help if you want me to try
anything different.

Thanks,

bcm4311 with bcm43xx module is really slow. Only had normal speed with ndiswrapper, but now i have problems with that too.

I have exactly the same problem. bcm43xxmodule is slow. I am using an HP Pavilion dv2310ca with a " Broadcom Corporation Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-PCI "

Same here.

But it is unusable. Lots and lots of packet loss and pings take 20k-30k+ ms. Seems to work okay on WPA networks (although sometimes I need to connect twice).

I just tried bcm43xx-mac80211 with the same results. Is it possibly a problem with retaining a specific firmware?

I am on a Dell Latitude 620 with running Fiesty Fawn x86_64. I see the problem described above i.e slow wireless network with fwcutter bcm4311 when connected to a wpa encrypted network. Is there a fix for this as of now?

Similar problem. May or may not be the same. Running Gutsy on AMD64 with a WPA2 network with a BCM4318. Not even ping works correctly-- suffers intermittent packet loss at first and then goes to total packet loss.

Hi, I have a BCM4306 on a Compaq Presario R3000 (Gentoo on X86_64). Everything used to work fine until I upgraded my memory over 1 GB. (Forcing me to upgrade the kernel to avoid a panic). Now I experience a lot of packet loss. I hypothesize that my laptop is getting confused with the neighbor's wifi network (Didn't change any config though). The Windows machine on which I write this doesn't seem to have this problem.

Hi Mike,

My laptop actually works with 7.10, but the connection is very flaky in that
it stops transmitting for a few minutes and a lot of the time most packets
are dropped. I have disabled the bcm43xx driver module and am using
ndiswrapper. That works great with no problems. If you want help doing
that I can give you some instructions if needed.

I too find very slow wireless connection using the "bcm43xx-fwcutter" .
I am using Ubuntu 7.1
At the terminal I see this:
02:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5705M Gigabit Ethernet (rev 01)
02:03.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4306 802.11b/g Wireless LAN Controller (rev 02)

This is a Dell D600 with the truemobile wireless card by Broadcom.

I would love to speed up my wireless somehow.

Hi,

I have Hardy RC (with all updates) running on a Dell D620 and I am also experiencing very slow wireless connections - speed shows 1Mb/s. I have also had much better luck with the card in XP Pro - I consistently connect to the same wireless networks (work and home) at 54Mb/s.

sudo lspci -v | grep BCM produces this:
09:00.0 Ethernet controller: Broadcom Corporation NetXtreme BCM5752 Gigabit Ethernet PCI Express (rev 02)
0c:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM94311MCG wlan mini-PCI (rev 01)

I'm down with using ndiswrapper, but I am a noob. Please hit me up with instructions. Thanks a billion in advance!

Here is a link for you for some instructions that seem to have everything I
did. It's been a while now. You'll need to download the windows driver for
your card and extract it to get the .inf file. I hope that helps.

Thanks for the reply. I am trying to follow the instructions but don't know enough about using terminal commands to compensate for any differences between the guide and what I have encountered. I'm already lost.

Thanks anyway!
