Darren's description seems accurate to me. I also see the wmaster0 interface when booting with 2.6.20.8, though I can't confirm that's what causes the v4 problems since I can't use v4 firmware.

bug 84917 should take care of the the bcm43xx-fwcutter problem.

Issues with bcm43xx and various firmware are in the kernel itself.
