I agree, this is vital. There's no suggestion on GNOME bugzilla that baobab has been so hobbled on other distros. Here is a screenshot (though old) of what the rest of the world sees, as far as I can tell, which has a drop-down menu to show the right column view:
I don't see how it would be in anyone's interest to disable people's ability to dismiss the right-hand graphical pane. I cannot get any information on the left side, or even any full directory names, unless my screen is at least 1800 pixels wide (not an option for many people).
