Bug Description

Binary package hint: banshee

On Karmic:

Since yesterday, Banshee is no longer able to play Last.fm radio/recommendations/streams. Scrobbling still works as expected. Playing any Last.fm station results in Banshee switching between play/paused states, giving up after five or so tries. The song in the playlist is then marked with an X, and

In the terminal, the following message is repeated each time the stream attempts to play:
[Error 22:38:50.655] GStreamer resource error: NotFound

Short video detailing the problem: http://files.getdropbox.com/u/118272/bansheelastfmfail.ogv

Banshee hasn't been updated in a long time, which makes me think that this isn't a Banshee bug. It is, however, the only application that Last.fm has stopped working in. I have tried clearing my Banshee configuration, but the issue persists.

Changed in banshee (Ubuntu):
importance: Undecided → Medium
status: New → Confirmed

I'm also getting this problem in Banshee AND rhythmbox. I actually installed Banshee thinking it was a rhythmbox error and it would be alright in Banshee.

Well since some people get problems with Rhythmbox and some don't, I figured I would mention that Rhythym works for me and I'm listening to last.fm with Rhythmbox 0.12.3 right now. However, this could be due to the fact that I subscribe to it and maybe all the people who can't use Rhythmbox, Songbird etc are not subscribers?

I guess this might be useful info for the Banshee developers.

Non-subscriber here, and Rhythmbox on Karmic works fine. Perhaps it is because those having problems with Rhythmbox are using the version from Jaunty or earlier?

As far as I know, this is not a subscriber/non-subscriber issue, but rather an issue with the API. In March, Last.fm stopped allowing 3rd-party software to stream radio via the old API, and Banshee hasn't adjusted to the new API yet. Work is being done in a separate git branch [1], and you can feel free to test that if you feel so inclined.

I just tried Banshee 1.5b to see if it was better then the last version which I stopped using because of the last.fm issues. I have since switched to amarok and the last.fm player in the ubuntu repo's which work perfectly. I like banshee but if I can't use it to listen to my last.fm tag's it just can't be my main player. Hopefully the developers get with it ans switch to the newer API but that obviously is up to them. In the meantime I will continue to use Amarok since it works.

I'm sorry, @grahams1, usually I don't take flame bait like that, but honestly, your comment was just too much. What positive work have you contributed to the project? Did you create a patch? Did you test the branch of Banshee that I linked to? If so, developers could really use your useful feedback.

Your comment, however, was not useful. This is the world of open source, and you're free to stop using a product at anytime. Telling the world that you're doing so in a bug report, and declaring the project as "dead" is just going to annoy people. Ironically enough, you declared the project "dead" only a few hours after a new release.

I'm sorry that the latest release doesn't fix Last.fm radio; for that you can always use the official Last.fm client (http://www.last.fm/download). And in the future, please think through your comment a little bit more before posting them to Launchpad.

Interesting heat I picked up here. Maybe somewhat justified, but it is frustratingly hard see what if anything was going on with this bug.

Even now 4 months after bug #397674 was reported and after a fix has been submitted to Banshee's git, this still isn't assigned an owner on launchpad. Why even list the bug here if no one will own it?

At least after my "flame" as you call it, others can finally figure out it is actually being worked on and now fixed.

@grahams1: This report has been assigned to the upstream bug report (gnome bug 541227) since at least August. Banshee developers don't use Launchpad to track issues, so its main purpose is to collect bugs that should be forwarded upstream. This one has linked to the upstream report for at least 3 months now.

Sorry I flipped out over your previous comment like that, but it's frustrating when someone decides a is project dead because developers haven't fixed a certain issue. Two comments before yours, I explained the problem and linked to a branch of Banshee where actual work was being done to fix the problem. Declaring Banshee a "dead project" at that point was not a necessary step in "figuring out it was actually being worked on."
