There are three ways to enable Metacity's compositing manager:
1. (Requires Jaunty, I think) Press Alt-F2 and run (without quotes) "metacity --composite --replace"
2. Click the "Applications" menu, navigate to "System" or "System Tools", and run "Configuration Editor". Navigate to the /apps/metacity/general folder and make sure the "compositing_manager" checkbox is checked.
3. From a terminal, run (without quotes) "gconftool-2 --set /apps/metacity/general/compositing_manager --type=bool true"
